YouTube to MP4: Keep the Video, Not Just the Song

For the times the picture matters too: concert clips, dance tutorials, music videos and workouts you want to watch, not just hear.

YouTube to MP4 Qualities and When to Use Each

Every MP4 option comes with sound, and the file size appears next to each one before you tap it.

MP3 or MP4: Which One Do You Need?

MP3 is just the sound. It's perfect when you're running, driving or cooking and your eyes are busy elsewhere. Files are light, so you can keep a whole album's worth of tracks or a stack of podcast episodes on your phone without thinking twice.

MP4 keeps the picture and the audio together. Pick it when the visuals are part of the experience: a live performance where you want to see the drummer, a guitar lesson that shows finger positions, a choreography you're learning step by step, or a follow-along workout where you need to copy the moves.

Not sure? Look at the screen time. If you'd glance at the video once and then pocket your phone, go MP3 on the home page. If you'd actually watch it, stay here and grab the MP4. Both formats live in the same tool, so switching takes one tap.

Watching Music Videos Offline

A few moments when a saved MP4 beats streaming.

  • Flights and long trips

Load up a handful of music videos or a full concert recording before you leave, and you won't depend on patchy onboard Wi-Fi or a weak signal on the highway.

  • Dance and instrument practice

Practice spaces and basements often have poor reception. With the MP4 on your device, you can pause, rewind and loop a tricky section as often as you like without buffering.

  • Gym and home workouts

Follow-along routines set to music work best when the video never stalls mid-set. A 720p file is usually sharp enough on a phone propped on the floor.

  • Sharing with friends in the room

Play a favorite live clip on a laptop or TV at a gathering without fighting for bandwidth. Choose 1080p if the screen is big.

  • Keeping your own uploads

If you posted your band's gig or your own covers on YouTube, saving the MP4 gives you a personal copy to keep alongside your other files.

Only save videos you own, that are in the public domain or licensed for it, or that you have permission to download.

How to Save a YouTube Video as MP4

It takes three quick steps in any modern browser, on a phone or a computer.

  1. Paste the video link

Copy the link from the YouTube app or website, including Shorts, youtu.be and YouTube Music links, and paste it into the box at the top of this page. Then tap the button.

  2. Choose an MP4 quality

The tool looks up the video and shows its title, length and the available qualities with their file sizes. Tap the one that fits your screen and storage.

  3. Save the file

The video opens in a new tab. If it starts playing on your phone, use the browser menu (three dots, then Download) or long-press and choose Download or Save. On a computer, right-click the video and pick Save video as.

YouTube to MP4 FAQ

Can I download YouTube videos in 4K or 1440p?

No. The MP4 options go up to 1080p Full HD and stop there. For most phones, tablets and laptops, 1080p already looks crisp, and 720p is a lighter alternative that still looks clean.

Do the MP4 files include sound?

Yes. Every MP4 quality, from 144p to 1080p, comes with audio built in. You don't need to download the sound separately or combine anything afterward.

Why does the video play in a new tab instead of downloading?

Many browsers, especially on phones, play MP4 files directly when they open. That's normal. Just save it from there: tap the three-dot menu and choose Download, or long-press the video and pick Download or Save. On a computer, right-click and select Save video as.

How do I know how much space the MP4 will take?

Each quality shows its file size before you tap it, so you can compare options first. Higher resolutions and longer videos mean larger files. If your phone is nearly full, a lower quality like 480p or 360p keeps things manageable.

Can I save YouTube Shorts or long concerts as MP4?

Both work. Paste a Shorts link the same way as a normal video link. Long recordings such as full concerts or hour-long workouts are fine too, since there's no length limit, though the file will naturally be bigger.

Why won't a certain video work?

Private, age-restricted, members-only, removed or region-blocked videos may not be available, and live streams that are still running can't be saved. If you're on a playlist link, only the single video in that link is saved. Also, if you opened this page inside Instagram, Facebook or TikTok, switch to Chrome or Safari.
